The Hookahs Charity Quiz

I’ve organized a Hookahs Charity Quiz Nite on many occasions since 2012. It’s a Pub Quiz with some polo and equestrian questions. The name started with the Hookahs Polo Tournaments, the first of which we ran in 2002. It was a polo tournament with an Arabian themed dinner party. We had belly dancers, and shishas, but instead of calling it the Shisha Tournament, it somehow became the Hookahs Polo Tournament.

The Hookahs, as we called ourselves, were a motley group of players who each donated RM5K to underwrite the cost of the tournament. After four editions of the tournament, I kept the name as a polo team, and eventually morphed it into the Hookahs Charity Quiz, always raising money for deserving charities.

At first, the Hookahs tournaments donated the proceeds to Mercy Malaysia. In 2008, the Hookahs Polo Tournament raised a cool RM100,000 for RDA Malaysia. Since 2012, the Hookahs Quizzes has raised money for Yayasan Chow Kit. Over the years, over RM200,000 has been donated to the various charities.

This year, we are screening a documentary that was made by our KL Academy of Polo student Woon King Chai, about child marriage in Malaysia. Our designated charity is the Sisters in Islam’s “Student Not Bride” campaign.

The Hookahs Quiz Nite, as a pub quiz, is a really fun evening. There will be some questions about the Kuala Lumpur Polo Club, equestrian sport and polo, but the bulk of the questions will be contemporary general knowledge – movies, music, and fun stuff like that.

First Ray, a company that has run quizzes nation-wide for the Ministry of Education will run the quiz. They have the whizz bang gadgets and the star scoring system to keep track of things. Prizes are donated by World of Feng Shui, Nala Designs, Love18 chocolates, Kuala Lumpur Academy of Polo and Zack’s Tack.

The Hookahs Charity Quiz will be run at the Kuala Lumpur Polo Club on Saturday 30^th September, after the first day’s polo of the KLAP Open. If you would like to enter a team or make an outright donation, please contact me by email at ztpete84@gmail.com or book through the Kuala Lumpur Polo Club’s office at (03) 42564531.
