There has been a huge focus on youth polo at the Kuala Lumpur Polo Club recently, with the hosting of the 2nd Malaysia Youth Polo Tournament on 2nd and 3rd September, followed the very next weekend with the Youth vs Experienced game at the KL Polo Open that was partnered by Rolls Royce.
The 2nd Malaysia Youth Polo Tournament was a huge success.
Having players from Australia, Pakistan and Singapore gave it an international feel, and with locally based Argentinian, Canadian, Croatian, and Argentinian players here, we flew quite a few flags in the opening day’s flag parade.
The standard of polo was outstanding, far better than it was in 2022. Ginesito Bargallo is a strong 3-goaler, so it was no surprise that his team won the cup. The international team of Jake Ednie-Brown (AUS), Matias Furlong (AUS), Mahad Ali (PAK) and helmed by Julian Lancia, played really well too.
It was lovely to see the Moiz Boyz play their first ever tournament as a family team.
Have a look at the lovely article posted by the Western Australia Polo Association.
True friendships were made by the players. I’m sure they will stay in touch with one another, and visit each other’s countries.
It was great to catch up with John and Lyndie Fischer, who came up for the tournament. It gave us a chance to set dates for another Perth Polo Experience Tour, which KL Academy of Polo will organize for 12th to 14th January next year.
There are also plans for a big international day at the Perth Polo Club on 24th and 25th February 2024.
I hope to be there for both.
The next weekend was what was supposed to be the KL Polo Open. It had taken the dates of the KLPC Low Goal, which was bumped in favour of the Rolls Royce partnered tournament.
In fact, it became only an exhibition game organised by the club between the young Hot Shots, and the experienced Big Shots.
It featured two father vs son match-ups from La Familia: Dato’ Mohamed Moiz playing against his son Imran, and Gines Bargallo playing against Ginesito.

Played off the stick, it was a crazily good game. The kids came to play, and came out flying. They weren’t messing about. La Sarita’s Agustin Andrada was caught on horses he took out for an exhibition game, and found himself in a battle of youthful pride.
The oldies, got their act together and ended the first day with a dramatic winner by Dato Mohamed Moiz, who first hit an exquisite nearside tail shot, then followed it up with a long run and a lofted neck shot from 60 yards out.
Check out this video of photos from Chris Yeo, whose shutter speed was able to catch this wonderful sequence.
The next day was just as dramatic, with the Young Guns again pressing hard. It was a super quick game both days, the best polo we have seen in Malaysia thus far thus this year.
That the final score was 12 – 11 in favour of the Big Shots, showed that experience still counts for something in this wonderful game.
