I’m honored and excited to be invited to attend the General Assembly and some training with the International Group of Equestrian Qualifications (IGEQ) next week in Vienna, Austria.
What is more exciting is that this IGEQ meeting is being held at the famous Spanish Riding School. The Spanish Riding School is an Austrian institution dedicated to the preservation of classical dressage and the training of Lipizzaner horses. It is the most prestigious of classical riding academies in the world, along with the French Cadre Noir, the Portuguese School of Equestrian Art, and the Royal Andalusian School.
The Malaysian Equine Council is plugged into Equestrian Australia’s National Coaching Accreditation Scheme. I am a Level 1 Instructor and Skill Specific Trainer and Assessor, and on the coaching panel of the MEM. Nevertheless, it is a privilege to be invited to attend the ICEQ conference.
I was supposed to go with my old friend Dato’ Malek Jeremiah, the CEO of the MEM. I have known Malek since the 70’s when we were both riding in amateur flat races. Unfortunately, with his wife Datin Rokiah in hospital, Malek won’t be going.
As a teen, when I was just starting my interest in horses, my father bought me a whole series from Pelham Books. One of the books happened to be Col. Alois Podhajsky’s Complete Training of Horse and Rider in the Principles of Classical Riding. I read in wonder about the levade, courbette, work between the poles, capriole, and their famous pas de deux and quadrille.
I’ve always wanted to visit the Spanish Riding School, and next week, I will finally be able to strike it off my bucket list.
