Hat-Trick

In what tends to be a patriarchal sport, perhaps the ‘Best Father and Son’ combination is Adolfo and Poroto Cambiaso.  They make a great double act.  Here in Malaysia, the Kuala Lumpur Triple Crown II Final had a triple double – three father and son combinations playing on the final day of the tournament.

La Familia 1 were the originals, with Dato Mohamed Moiz and Gines Bargallo facing their sons Imran and Ginecito in the La Familia II team.  The young ones upstaged the originals (I won’t call them the oldies) 5 ½ to 5.

If the score seems respectful, it was.  La Familia II was never truly extended and Ginesito walked away with the MVP award.

Dato’ Mohamed more than held his own though, scoring two really good goals.  In both cases he had a lot a work to do, and ran practically the length of the field to score.

Gines also showed his son a thing or two.  Gines hit a trademark scorcher from 120 yards out, just to remind everyone what he has still got.

In the Bob Blake Trophy, La Sarita’s father-son combination of Asad and Ameer Jumabhoy played some nice polo to defeat Tu Polo 6 – 4.

It was Asad’s return to Malaysian polo after covid lockdowns and even more health scares.  He is looking fit and played like his old self (no pun intended).  Asad put in some great bumps and hit the tails with the panache we have been missing for the last three years.

Ameer had a really good game, looking sharp.

For me, I got to make a return to polo after a few weeks out battling injuries.  I got to play with Charlie Wood, the son of Roddy Wood, a friend that I had won the Jumabhoy Cup with in 1986 in Singapore.  Charlie is New Zealand’s South Island Player of the Year.

The Selangor Polo Club, which has recently voted to change its name to the Kuala Lumpur Polo Club, has 120 years of history as a family club.  It might be a change of name, but its family values are solid.

Between La Familiia 1 and La Familia II, they have won the first two Triple Crown Tournaments, the KL Polo Classic and the KL Triple Crown II.  Can they take the final jewel in the Triple Crown?  Another hat-trick.
