The young Malaysian team of Imran Moiz, Keith Teh, Mohd Zulhelmie (Lalo) and Rashid Hasnan completed qualifying unbeaten in the B Division of the South East Asian Games Polo Tournament. They disposed of the Indonesia 7-2 yesterday, to qualify in first place for Monday morning’s final.
At an average age of 19.25 years, this Malaysian team is the culmination of Malaysian polo. Everything we have done has led to this. The RMPA Leagues, started in 2005 have provided a competitive foundation for these players. They have learned their trade in our leagues.
To beat a team of Indonesian professionals so easily, this Malaysian team showed they have it all. Maturity and experience, beyond their ages. Skill and teamwork.
Regardless of what happens in the final on Monday, the whole of the Malaysian team can be very proud. Team Manager Dato’ Zekri and Team Coach Fede Bachmann are on the verge of a third gold medal in their tenure (2017, 2019A and now 2019B.)
Shaik Reismann has mentored Imran Moiz, Keith Teh and Rashid Hasnan. Shaik has been RMPA and RSPC’s one man Youth Development Programme. It is so wonderful for him to see it happen.
The man who led us all on this journey is Dato’ Mohamed Moiz. He has been the driving force behind all this. For him, the final is the culmination of an incredible journey, not only as President of RMPA and RSPC, but also as Imran’s father. He deserves all the credit for Malaysia’s success in polo.
Whatever happens in the final, Malaysia has done incredibly well. Against the odds, on borrowed horses, with the youngest teams, two Finals in a SEA Games we never looked like getting to just three months ago. One gold so far. Stay tuned for Monday’s result.
