The year got a whole lot worse, with Malaysia’s Department of Veterinary Services announcing yesterday that African Horse Sickness had reached Malaysian shores. Somehow, AHS has traveled all the way from Thailand to Terengannu. DVS has confirmed one case there, while unconfirmed rumours are that four horses have symptoms and that one has died.
While the state of Terengannu is now quarantined with no horse movements allowed, in or out, there is no mention of which stable the outbreak is in. How the horse got there, or how the midges manage to fly from Thailand to Terengganu bypassing other horse populations in Kelantan is a mystery.
Could the outbreak be worse than reported? I am afraid there is that chance.
There goes the season.
